Well, I just found something really useful today and thought I'd share it with everyone.
First of all, I am sure that for many of us who have registered their own domain, we usually get ONE measely "free" email address that is named for the domain we purchased. In some cases, may be 5, or 20. Or, in worst case scenarios, none.
Well when I registered mine, I only got one free one. It was a no-brainer to create the email address. However, most "professional" sites have email addresses like "support@domain.com" and "sales@domain.com" etc for different purposes. Assuming you registered your domain for a business goal, having just one "free" email probably wouldn't suit your business, and you would probably already have paid a small fee to "upgrade" your plan so that you can get more email addresses to run your business.
Today, I ran across Google Apps. Ok, with a name like that, it's nothing to shout about. Google Apps is a web-based office productivity suite, kinda like Microsoft Office On The Web. Yes you get the usual Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Pages and all that jazz. However, what drew me to it was the fact that the "standard" edition, ie FREE edition, already allows you to create up to 100 free email accounts, and they can be named for your domain! Not only that, each of these email account is a Gmail clone - ie you get 4GB (and counting) storage for your email PER ACCOUNT. FREE! If you went ahead and created 100 accounts, you'd have 400GBs of storage for your email.. wow! For a small business, I doubt anyone would need more than 50. Oh did I mention they are POP and IMAP capable too? Would probably fit right in to most organisations.
In any case, I wasted no time in signing up, and configuring Google Apps for a few more email addresses to my domain. Instructions provided by Google Apps are easy for guiding you to create DNS entries or to point them to Google so that your brand-spanking-new email addresses are ready to accept email.
No I'm not making any money off this, and there's no "referral link". Just something really cool that I'd like to share with you guys.

21:38 by FoxTwo ... really cool! And useful, and convenient.
Here I go again, reconfiguring stuff. I just realised Blogger allows you to easily use your own domain names for your blogs, all you gotta do is click on the settings inside blogger, and then make a minor addition to your DNS.
You don't even have to move any files to any server... you can still host your stuff on blogspot.com! Best of all, you get to keep all the nifty widgets and stuff you can drag around to redo the layout of your blog!
Now, I have consolidated my other 2 blogs under subdomains of my domain. Shades Of Twilight is now at http://shades.foxtwo.org and I'm Such A Loser is now located at http://loser.foxtwo.org.
Well it sure is easier to remember the URLs. Due to this, I'm making another round of reconfiguring all the other external services that I use on these 2 blogs, so that now they point to the right place.
Again, I'm torn at Technorati. But, I decided to leave Technorati alone. After all, the "old" domains for the 2 blogs still work... it's just now they automatically redirect to my domain.
Gawd that also means should probably redo some of my website templates again....

00:13 by FoxTwo I had always been thinking about getting a domain name for myself. I am known in many circles by 2 common monikers - foxtwo, and elite.
For obvious reasons, "elite.whatever" is always taken, and I don't really fancy a "elite.sg" domain. Let's just call it paranoia that I would prefer not to register a domain here in Singapore, even though the servers I host my stuff on might be outside of Singapore. Of course, that's speaking in a personal capacity. If I had a business, I would register it in Singapore if the business is based here.
Anyway, I was just talking to xinyun the other day about domains and stuff. Then she asked me why I never registered a domain, given that my "blog" had existed for well over 7 years (and yeah not very widely read cos I don't really promote it). I said they're all taken. But, while talking to her I did a domain check again on my usual 2 monikers. Surprise surprise! One of them's been released, and it was back in Feb 2007!
I jumped on the chance and got http://www.foxtwo.org registered for only US$7.00! What can I say, godaddy.com gives good deals... 10 years ago it would have cost US$50.00 for a domain name, and even though the amount seem small, it's something I would SERIOUSLY consider before I break out my wallet.
So anyway, I spent the weekend configuring the domain, and slowly switching all the stuff I use for my blog(s) over to the new domain. Stuff like Blogrush, Widgetbucks etc, they need to be pointing to my new domain now, so that even if I decide to switch hosts later, I don't need to re-vist them all to re-configure them.
I was half-torn in Technorati though - I *could* register a new username - FoxTwo - but my old username - ELiTe - already has some history (not much, but some), so I did. In the end, I didn't. I just claimed a new blog at the new address and resetted all the stats for this one blog to zero.
Now, I'm contemplating something I have thought of in 2004, but never got around to doing - redoing my templates of my website and blog. They look positively archaic right now... and I did 'em back in 1997 or so... wow, 10 years already huh!
