People are condemning what's happening there, all sound and fury. But seriously, is any country taking any action? Is USA coming to the rescue like it did when Kuwait was annexed by Iraq in 1991? Heck no. Why? Because.. Burma doesn't have what US wants - Oil. Is NATO doing anything? Sending peacekeepers in? No again... because Burma's government is still in control. And, they're sending out death squads to quell the unrest.
Draconian? You betcha.
Makes you realise why our own country makes it illegal to have a protest huh? You ever wondered what would happen if it wasn't illegal here? I speculate that something similar might happen here - ie people unhappy with the current government's policies might take to the streets, and might result in chaos. The police might have no choice but to send in ang chias (riot squads) to quell the riots. Heck, they already did that with the Odex figurine photoshoot! In the process of quelling riots, it is almost a certainty that there will be casualties, fatal or otherwise.
Standing up for your ideals is wonderful. Dying for it takes courage. But dying and then nothing changes is a WASTE.
I doubt Burmese government will change their stance on this, but one can only hope.
